Christmas in the Wild Wild West

Welcome to the first Sin and Salvation Christmas challenge!

Christmas in post Civil War America was nothing like today's corporate-profit-driven chaos, but many of the typical elements were already present. Some came from fairly recent sources (the decorated tree, introduced into England in 1841, and Christmas cards, which became popular later in the 19th century) and some had very early pagan roots (candles, holly, wassail, and bells ringing, for example).

Jim and Artie might have decorated the train with mistletoe and holly, hung blown-glass balls on a fir tree, and celebrated the days with plum pudding and egg nog. Certainly they would have exchanged gifts.

Whatever your Christmas or holiday tradition may be, we, the authors, hope you will enjoy these stories, offered as gifts of love in a world where love seems to be in short supply nowadays.
